Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

We accept article submissions from all medical students and health-science students from universities in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

We accept the following article types:

  1. Original Research
  2. Case Reports
  3. Literature Reviews
  4. Essays
  5. Medical Education Articles

Please see the following guidelines for information on how to prepare an article. Please note that articles can be rejected without review on the basis of not being formatted correctly or properly referenced. The guidelines are very straightforward, so please ensure your article is formatted accordingly prior to submission. Please download and use the TSMJ template for formatting your submission.

All authors are required to sign a TSMJ Publishing Agreement Form which should be submitted with an article.

If you are also submitting an article that contains patient data please complete the TSMJ Patient Consent Form.

Please note that all submissions that are not within the guideline word limits, and that are not using Vancouver referencing will be immediately sent back to the authors, or rejected outright. Screening for plagiarism will occur during the review stage, if plagiarism is detected the article will be rejected.

Copyright Notice

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work’s authorship and initial publication in this journal.

Provided they are the owners of the copyright to their work, authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal’s published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository, in a journal or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
