Turbulence and Transition: The Economic and Social Consequences of Contemporary Global Events in Ireland

The Economic and Social Review is inviting papers for a special issue on “Turbulence and Transition: The Economic and Social Consequences of Contemporary Global Events in Ireland,” edited by Dr Carmel Hannan (University of Limerick), Dr Conor O’Toole (ESRI) and Dr Darragh Flannery (University of Limerick). This special issue seeks to publish empirical research from the social sciences that advances our understanding of how recent global events—such as Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, the War in Ukraine, the cost-of-living crisis, the climate transition and the emerging trend of deglobalisation—have impacted or may impact on Ireland's society and economy.

We welcome papers employing quantitative and mixed method approaches to broaden our understanding of the repercussions of these events in areas including (but not limited to): the labour market, inequality, health outcomes, fiscal policy, housing, climate, trade, foreign direct investment, migration, relationships and family. Papers employing a comparative international approach are also welcome.

As a general interest journal, The Economic and Social Review is well positioned to cut across different fields within Economics and Sociology to give insight into research in this space. The issue will consider both full length articles as well as shorter (c7,000 words) more descriptive studies that have a specific policy focus.
The deadline for article submission is March 27th, 2026. The papers will be subject to a normal double-blind review process and accepted papers will be published in Winter 2026.
